Food Democracy
TrajectoryIn recent years, it has become clear that something needs to change in the way we organise our food supply. Our current food system is harming our environment and our health. However, the possibility of change is hampered by the organisation of the system itself. In an interview with MO*, Olivier de Schutter, Special Adviser on the Right to Food at the UN, cites, among other things, that our food system has for too long focused unilaterally on efficiency. Quantities outweighed quality, so small farms merged to meet demand. One result is that a small number of companies today have large networks, with which they control a large part of the food chain. It is increasingly difficult for smaller or local players to stand up to these companies and the system they create. Because of their powerful position, these companies also manage to exert great influence on political decisions.
