Abstract

This study utilized a mixed methods approach to thoroughly investigate the dietary habits of the Somali community residing in Ghent, Belgium, and the socioeconomic factors that influence their food choices. The research involved structured interviews, food security questionnaires, and food diaries to gain qualitative insights into the community's perspectives, cultural aspects, and economic influences affecting their dietary preferences. The findings indicated that the Somali community in Ghent encounters various challenges, including economic limitations, cultural inclinations, and restricted access to diverse food options, all of which impact their dietary patterns. However, the research also underscored the community's resilience and highlighted communal support systems and cultural preservation as strategies contributing to food security. These insights are valuable for policymakers, the community, and researchers working on food security issues among migrant populations. They can be utilized to develop targeted interventions that best cater to the community's distinct needs and promote sustainable access to varied and nutritious diets.
