The research group S:PAM (Studies in Performing Arts & Media) of the Arts Department and the Stadsacademie are pleased to announce the launch of a new sustainability issue “A Matter of Water”. Through this issue, we aim to explore the following questions:
How can we rethink our relationship with water in times of climate change?
What forms of knowledge, practices, and collaboration are needed to enable sustainable, just, and resilient water futures?
How can researchers, citizens, policymakers, artists, and civil society organizations jointly develop new responses to the challenges of water management, water quality, and water availability, thereby contributing to resilient ecosystems and societies?
Our initial focus will be on the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal, as the canal’s 200th anniversary in 2027 will provide a range of inspiring opportunities for collaboration. We are particularly keen to connect with initiatives such as Water as Fabric (Water Als Weefsel / WaW), a cultural-historical partnership project of the City of Ghent.
After 2027, the focus will broaden to other water contexts, while continuing to value the importance of local embeddedness. At the same time, we depart from the understanding that bodies of water never exist in isolation but are part of interconnected hydro-ecological and societal networks.
We are aiming to establish a masterproefatelier in the academic year 2027-2028. Through debates, workshops, and other activities, we hope to put water-related issues more prominently on the political and societal agenda.
We will begin with a Stadsacademie Session on Tuesday, 10 November, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Green Hub.
What is a Stadsacademie Session?
Sometimes the Stadsacademie encounters a complex issue for which no clear approach exists yet, or that is not being addressed elsewhere. In such cases, we organize a Stadsacademie Session. Together with everyone who feels involved, we explore which questions and perspectives are relevant, what kind of transdisciplinary team could be brought together, and which initial research and educational activities might be possible. In this way, the Stadsacademie functions as a platform for encounter and collective exploration. The aim is not to provide ready-made solutions, but to jointly investigate what an issue calls for and how we might engage with it.
