Er is de voorbije twee jaar opnieuw heel wat werk verzet in de Stadsacademie. Hoog tijd om dit te delen met het brede publiek! Het Stadsacademiefeest dient in de eerste plaats om de samenwerking over allerlei duurzaamheidskwesties tussen UGent en de stad te vieren. Het is daarnaast een moment om onze hele community en geïnteresseerden bij elkaar te brengen. Zo kunnen we samen reflecteren over onze werking en de lopende trajecten. Kortom, iedereen is welkom: studenten, onderzoekers, beleidsmakers, middenveldorganisaties, burgers…

In de namiddag starten we met workshops, die georganiseerd worden in het kader van onze lopende en nieuwe trajecten. Er is ook een introductieworkshop voor iedereen die wilt kennismaken met de werking van de Stadsacademie.

In de late namiddag komen we plenair samen, waar we starten met een inspirerende lezing van dr. Derek Ruez “Imaginaries of the ‘urban good’ in a plural and uneven world”. We staan stil bij onze plannen voor het komende academiejaar, en sluiten af met een receptie.

17:00 - 18:00 — Lezing Derek Ruez “Imaginaries of the ‘urban good’ in a plural and uneven world” (EN)

In the face of the myriad, intersecting challenges of our times, policy-makers, planners, activists, and citizens alike are seeking to make their cities better—smarter, more sustainable, more creative. This pursuit of what could be called the ‘urban good’ often involves improvements to city spaces and urban lives that would be difficult to argue against. Who wouldn’t want their city to be smarter or more sustainable, for example? Yet, critical research on these urban imaginaries and projects consistently reveals far more complicated stories about the enmeshment of state power, economic interests, and conflicting values. However, more than simply a skeptical take that would contrast an imagined good with a real agenda under the surface, this talk seeks to develop conceptual resources for understanding how imaginaries of the good come to operate in urban politics (broadly construed). Drawing on examples from research on a network of projects seeking to make cities more ‘compassionate’ places alongside, as well as recent work on the racialized politics of queer urban spaces, the talk seeks to offer a perspective from which to integrate critical attention to how power-laden formulations of the urban good come to uphold socio-spatial inequalities and hierachical differentiations, while also recognizing and reckoning with the plurality of people, values, and projects that emerge and coalesce around any imagined good.
